Angel Reese said singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before a game against the Indiana Fever carried special meaning after hearing boos from some fans in Indiana.

Speaking after the Atlanta Dream defeated Indiana on Saturday, Reese said the moment reminded her of the challenges she has faced during her basketball career.
“It was just one in the moment of where I was, and how it felt, and how it hit,” Reese told reporters. She added that hearing the song made her think about those who came before her and helped create opportunities for Black athletes.
Reese also discussed the importance of representation, saying she hopes young people can see themselves reflected in successful athletes.
The hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is often referred to as the Black National Anthem. Written by James Weldon Johnson with music by John Rosamond Johnson, it has been featured during WNBA Juneteenth celebrations in recent years.

Ongoing Reese-Clark Spotlight
Reese and Caitlin Clark remain two of the league’s most closely watched stars, with their rivalry dating back to college basketball.
The Atlanta Dream defeated Indiana twice within three days:
- Thursday: Atlanta won 108–101, with Reese recording 21 points and 11 rebounds.
- Saturday: Atlanta won 113–96, while Clark scored 26 points for Indiana.

During Saturday’s game, Reese also reached a major milestone, becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to record 1,000 career rebounds, accomplishing the feat in 79 games and surpassing the previous record held by Tina Charles.
Previous Controversies
Reese has previously spoken about online harassment and alleged racism directed toward her by some fans. In 2025, the WNBA investigated reports of racist behavior during a game between the Fever and Reese’s former team, the Chicago Sky. The league later announced it found no evidence supporting those specific allegations.
Despite the controversy, Reese said she intends to continue using her platform to speak about issues she believes are important.
The latest chapter in the Reese-Clark storyline comes as both players continue to help drive record attention and viewership for women’s basketball.
